17-4PH

17-4PH

17-4PH is a widely-used martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel with a high concentration of chromium and nickel. It has many favorable properties, including excellent strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties up to 600 °F (316 °C).
The alloy also possesses good toughness when welded, while short low-temperature heat treatments reduce warping and scaling. Additionally, 17-4PH is easy to machine and fabricate.
Its strength and moderate corrosion resistant properties are maintained in service temperatures up to the 600° F to 800° F range. The alloy is furnished in the solution annealed condition (Condition A).
It should not be used at temperatures above 572°F (300°C) or for cryogenic service.
Optimal mechanical properties can be obtained by subjecting the alloy to age hardening heat treatments.
Heat treatment in the 900°F (482°C) range produces the highest strength.
The corrosion resistance of Alloy 17-4PH is comparable to 304 stainless steel in most environments, and is generally superior to the 400 series stainless steels. It is used in applications where the combination of moderate corrosion resistance and unusually high strength are required.
Bars, Wire, and Forgings are usually a single-melt product offered to AMS 5643 for aerospace applications.
A CEVM (Consumable Electrode Vacuum Melt) or VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelt) product is specified in AMS 5622.
Both specifications require that bars and forgings be restricted to 8” Diameter or less, or 8” least distance between parallel sides.
A provision is included to allow larger sizes, provided that the Buyer and Seller agree upon mechanical properties for the size in question.
